Q What are the differences between “pre-owned”, “refurbished” and “used” equipment? What do “new surplus”, “new/open box” and “new/in box” mean?

A Hula Networks considers all equipment it sells as “pre-owned,” meaning originally it was sold by the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and now is being resold.  Hula “refurbishes” ALL of its equipment.   When “used” hardware comes in is set for refurbishment, first it has to arrives at our warehouse. It is tested, fixed any potential issues, and if needed, the hardware is cosmetically worked. We always test the hardware when it comes in and again before they ship it out. “New-surplus” equipment has never been used and may also be described in terms of the condition of its packaging “New/in box” typically denotes the product is from the manufacturer’s distribution channel or from customer surplus that was never used with its original tape unopened.

Q Does Hula Networks test equipment?

A All Hula Networks’ used equipment has undergone full inspection, cleaning, testing and reconditioning to return the equipment to as close to original condition as possible. In some cases, equipment requires minor repairs or cosmetic improvement, and is then designated as “refurbished” We always test the hardware when it comes in and again before they ship it out.

Q. Are their security issues with refurbished equipment?

A. When it comes to routers and switches, there is no data stored on them, so security concerns are not relevant. Most refurbished equipment Hula Networks sells falls under routers or switch categories.  Only configurations may be stored on devices, so those are wiped when the equipment is restored back to factory default.

Q. What are the Benefits of Buying Refurbished Hardware?

  • Price – Refurbished equipment is cheaper than buying new equipment.
    • Lead time – The lead time is just transit time as it is in stock.
    • Fewer Issues – Initial bugs or software issues with the equipment have already been identified and addressed.  Large Enterprise businesses use “older” technologies since they have already been tried, tested, and used so most of the bugs have been squashed, leading to far greater reliability compared to newer technologies or models.
    • Availability– Sometimes hardware becomes available on the refurbished market soon after its release.
    • Proven Technology – When the company is standardized on a specific product and the manufacturer stops making these you can still buy them refurbished. Moreover, vendors such as Hula Networks also help their customers find alternative options when a specific switch or router is not available.

Q Where does Hula Networks source its equipment?

A Hula Networks gets most of its equipment from the same companies that are also its customers. When a company upgrades their environment, cancels a project or closes a location, Hula Networks will buy its surplus equipment or take it as credit toward a purchase. We also source equipment from systems integrators who may purchase gear for a client only to see the project cancelled or changed, as well as other used equipment resellers.  When Hula Networks receives used hardware, the customers they bought it from had often been using it up to that point but are only offloading it because they need or want to upgrade. Sometimes the hardware hasn’t even been used at all, but their customer had been keeping it as a backup or a spare unit.

Q What type of warranty does Hula Networks provide on the equipment it sells?
